Katahdins are an easy to raise and maintain hair
sheep breed. The breed was developed in 1950s in
Maine to produce a hardy meat sheep that does not
require shearing. Katahdin sheep are medium in size,
with ewes weighing 120–160 pounds and rams weighing
180–250 pounds. As hair sheep, Katahdins shed
without being sheared. The sheep vary somewhat in
the type and amount of fiber in their coats, though
it is preferred that sheep be completely free of
woolly fibers after shedding.
The small flock of Katahdins on our farm spend
their time roaming and grazing the green acres. With
a closed flock they are healthy animals who never
need medicine or supplement and produce great
quality grass-fed meat products.
